When to trim a cedar hedge

A cedar hedge is a natural and inexpensive way to preserve the privacy of your yard. To keep it healthy and well stocked, however, you must maintain it annually. The perfect time to prune it is between the end of June and about the end of August, once the trees have completed most of their growth. Never cut the hedge in the spring or fall. Also, avoid pruning on a day when the temperature is very high.

Considering these criteria, relatively few days in the year are conducive to the maintenance of your plant fence. We therefore invite you to make an appointment with us as soon as possible so that we can take care of this task. We can even set a fixed date if you wish, so that Emondage Longueuil Pro can ensure the pruning of your cedar hedge from year to year.

How to prune well

When the cedars are young, we cut them on the sides only, so that they can continue their growth and reach a satisfactory height. It is when they are mature that we also prune their tops.

We prefer the conical rather than vertical shape as a final result, so that the light can penetrate all the surface of the foliage and promote good development. This shape will also help the shrubs to support the weight of the snow.

To ensure that your cedar hedge continues to grow and retain its vitality, we generally prune no more than a third of the new shoots. In exceptional cases, it is possible to cut up to half.

It is preferable to entrust this task to a professional arborist, to avoid removing too much or cutting in the wrong place. This is because conifers cannot create new shoots from old branches. If you make a mistake, your hedge will have unsightly holes!

Why prune cedars

Annual pruning allows you to control the height and width of your cedar hedge. If you neglect this task a few times, the negative consequences could be very difficult to recover or even create irreversible damage. In other words, you will have to make more drastic and therefore riskier cuts. Annual maintenance ensures that your cedars remain healthy and maintain the beautiful density necessary to preserve your privacy.

Training size

This type of cutting is intended to determine a precise structure to the tree early in its growth. When the tree is young, it is easier to identify and correct imperfections in its structure. When the tree is more mature, its branches are larger and they heal more slowly after cutting. This can lead to certain complications that endanger the life of the tree.

The creation of an optimal shape maintains a good balance between the antlers and the roots and promotes the longevity of the tree. Another popular reason for training pruning is to create both shade and space under the tree for a table. In the case of fruit trees, pruning is more aimed at optimizing fruit production. This type of operation is an art that must be adapted to the variety of tree, its age and its environment.
